Episode 25 – Book Club – Gone to Amerikay

Presenting: Episode 25!

On this Episode Jeff and Russell discuss Gone to Amerikay by Derek McCullough and Colleen Doran, with colors by Jose Villarubia. We talk about what it means when people say that a place is a character in a story, some of the challenges of telling a story without the need for a cliffhanger at the end of each issue, and more!

A quick correction: Derek McCullough is Canadian, although he lives in Oakland, California.

Here are some panels to refer to:

IMGP0029

One of the panels in which Doran depicts all three interconnected stories on a single page, each “era” blending into one another.

IMGP0026

And the image we discussed specifically with regard to an “open” layout, each image leading to the next without panels or gutters.

All images by and copyright Colleen Doran with colors by Jose Villarubia, published by Vertigo Comics.
